A microphone is a device that converts sound pressure into an electrical signal. Common types of microphones used for recording are dynamic, condenser, ribbon, and piezo, though there are other types, such as carbon, laser, and even liquid. Common polar patterns are Bi-Directional, Cardioid, Hypercardioid, Omnidirectional, and Line-Cardioid or "Shotgun".
